How to Purchase Our Surplus Wood

All surplus wood is located at our Phoenix, IL facility and is available in multiple sizes and configuration. Please email surplus@sterlingsolutions.com to inquire about purchasing.

The yard is close to multiple major expressways and accessible only commercial vehicles and rail cars.  We do not accept personal vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, or cars.

By the Truckload

We accept only commercial trucks. Our staff will handle loading, but you are responsible for securing loads and ensuring it is road-worthy. Please inquire about truck type compatibility when ordering.

  • For mulch: acceptable truck types include Open Top Trailers, Walking Floor Trailers, Dump Trucks, or similar equipment with enclosed sides.
  • For mats and other large pieces: Flatbed Trucks are preferred.
By the Railcar

We accept open railcars via our CN Direct rail spur. This line comes directly into our yard and may be the most economical options for those capable of receiving rail freight. There may be limitations based on product selected. Please inquire about freight type compatibility when ordering.

  • For mulch: acceptable railcar types include Open Top or similar equipment with enclosed sides.
  • For mats and other large pieces: Centerbeam or Flatbed railcarts are preferred.

General information

  • All of our wood products are sold or distributed AS-IS
  • Our wood products carry no guarantees of performance, strength, durability, aesthetic qualities, etc.
  • Once the product has been loaded, it cannot be returned.
  • All products will be taken from the top of the pile first, there is no selection of specific pieces available
Used TerraLam 504 Mats

$50 per mat
20 mat minimum

These are surplus used CLT mats utilize the same technology as all of our TerraLam mats. Each mat measures approximately 4ft x 16ft x 7in and weighs 1200-1500lbs. These are made from Southern Yellow Pine and an inert polyurethane adhesive

Used Timber Mats

$100 per truck
$200 per railcar

End of life timber and crane mats from our rental fleet. Each mat measures approximately 4ft x 16-20ft x 8in and weighs 2500-5000lbs. These are made from mixed hardwoods with a varying number of large (4ft) steel bolts.

CLT Edge Cutoffs

$100 per truck
$200 per railcar

New TerraLam mat cutoffs from our production line. These are straight from our factory and have not seen use on construction sites. These measure approximately 4-18ft x 2-4in x 4-8in and are made from Southern Yellow Pine and an inert polyurethane adhesive.

Hardwood Chunks

$150 per truck
$300 per railcar

New hardwood cut-offs from our Lion Lumber facility. These green pieces of hardwood have not been used and vary in size and shape, typically smaller than 6in x 6in x 12in.

New Softwood Mulch

$400 per 53′ trailer
$200 per smaller trucks
$400 per railcar

New mulch made from our new CLT cutoffs. This material has not been used on construction sites and is made from cutoffs directly from our factory. Mulch is 2″ screened with a chip size of 1.5 – 2.5″ and contains a mix of mostly Southern Yellow Pine and some small inert polyurethane foam pieces.

Hardwood Mulch

$400 per 53′ trailer
$200 per smaller trucks
$400 per railcar

Mulch made from a mixed-hardwoods. This material is made from retired timber and bolted access mats. Mulch is 2″ screened with a chip size of 1.5 – 2.5″ and contains mostly mixed woods, some small inert polyurethane foam pieces, and random debris.

Mixed Wood Mulch

$400 per 53′ trailer
$200 per smaller trucks
$400 per railcar

Mulch made from a combination of used softwoods and hardwoods. This material is made from retired access mats. Mulch is 2″ screened with a chip size of 1.5 – 2.5″ and contains mostly mixed woods, some small inert polyurethane foam pieces, and random debris.

Large Shard Mulch

$400 per 53′ trailer
$200 per smaller trucks
$400 per railcar

Mulch made from a combination of used softwoods and hardwoods. This material is made from retired access mats. It is 6″ – 9″ in chip size and contains mostly mixed woods, some small inert polyurethane foam pieces, and random debris.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, our equipment is not designed to load small vehicles like pickup trucks, vans, or cars. These vehicles will be turned away at our loading areas.

Yes, all of our mulch is currently being used in various local parks, public areas, and homes. It is not a decorative grade product but serves its purpose as a top ground covering.

No, no work can be performed on site. All products must be taken off site as is.

No, all mats will be picked from the top of the pile. Exceptions to this are only for 504 mats if more than 40 are being purchased.

Yes, please inquire directly about what size cutoff panels we have. These are stored inside and vary from day to day.

No, we do not schedule, arrange, or otherwise help with freight logistics for our excess material. Freight must be pre-arranged as we will only handle collecting payment for product, load fees, and perform the loading of the product.
