LIFT PLANS & GROUND SUPPORT WITH TERRALAM 700s
Every successful lift begins with a solid foundation. A well-developed lift plan doesn’t just protect equipment—it protects crews, schedules, and budgets. Here, we break down the essentials of lift planning, the importance of engineered ground support, and the role of TerraLam 700 Series mats in creating a safer, more reliable lifting environment.

Lift Plans and Ground Support with TerraLam® 700 Series

WHAT'S A LIFT PLAN?

A lift plan defines how a load is handled by a crane or other lifting device in accordance with ASME P30.1 – Planning for Load Handling Activities, serving as a detailed roadmap for safe and efficient operations. It outlines equipment configuration and load data, evaluates ground conditions and bearing calculations, specifies pad or mat design and sequencing, and establishes safety, inspection, and contingency procedures to ensure every lift is executed within engineered limits.

WHY IT MATTERS?

Ground Support Is the Critical Variable

Ground Support Is the Critical Variable

Even the most accurate load charts fail if the surface beneath the equipment deforms. Soil strength, mat stiffness, and load transfer between layers and the subgrade determine overall stability. Clay or sand composition, seasonal moisture, and groundwater can drastically alter bearing capacity. Because inconsistent mat behavior can cause settlement or tilt that invalidates rated capacities, modern lift plans specify engineered mat systems with verified structural properties to ensure predictable, repeatable performance.

Plan Early for Safety and Availability

Plan Early for Safety and Availability

Integrating mat selection early in the pre-construction phase turns ground support from a field adjustment into a controlled design parameter. Early planning enables accurate ground bearing pressure modeling, secures mat supply ahead of demand, and minimizes downtime from stacking or scheduling delays. Evaluating alternates such as TerraLam® 700-series CLT alongside 12-inch timber keeps critical lifts on schedule even during material shortages, ensuring safety, consistency, and cost control from the start.

WHY USE TERRALAM 700s?

TerraLam 700 Series mats are designed to support large mobile cranes and exceptionally heavy equipment. Engineered as a more efficient, durable, and sustainable replacement for traditional 12-inch timber crane mats, the 7-ply design delivers exceptional strength with significantly less weight. At approximately 6¾ inches thick, TerraLam 700 mats provide a stable, uniform platform that’s easier to handle, transport, and position across rights-of-way—making them ideal for lift pads, travelways, and high-capacity construction sites.

Engineered for Predictable Strength

Engineered for Predictable Strength

The TerraLam® 700 Series provides a uniform, high-performance platform purpose-built for demanding lift environments. Its engineered 7-ply construction delivers consistent structural behavior, eliminating the variability of traditional timber mats. With predictable allowables for bending, shear, and compression that are tested and published for verification, each mat offers uniform thickness and stiffness regardless of wood species or moisture. The reduced weight allows for faster handling and less equipment strain, while its manufactured consistency ensures it performs as a designed composite rather than a variable sawn product.

Proven Performance

Proven Performance

TerraLam mats weigh less than traditional hardwood mats, allowing more lineal footage of matting to be loaded on each truckload.  In 2023 shipments of TerraLam mats reduced CO2 emissions by 1,948 metric tons compared to alternate mat -while also reducing spend on freight shipments.

The lifecycle of TerraLam CLT mats are documented through an APD that is registered through EPD Hub in accordance with EN 15804+A2:2019 and ISO 14025. HUB-0174 covers the Raw Materials, Transport, Manufacturing, Assembly, End of Life, and Reuse of the product.
