WHAT ARE THE TERRALAM SPECS?
TerraLam CLT mats are available in a variety of sizes and ply counts to meet the ground protection needs of most projects. Below you will find information on the different models of TerraLam, what other mat types they can replace or complement, and what types of site conditions they are best suited for.

TERRALAM SPECS

terralam 308

TERRALAM 308

TerraLam 3-ply mats are a direct replacement for traditional bolted access mats and plastic mats. They are well suited for temporary access roads, drilling/equipment staging platforms, and general construction matting needs.

terralam 504/508

TERRALAM 504/508

TerraLam 5-ply mats are engineered for heavy-duty use such as with increased traffic, high-load trucks, and tracked machinery. These are available in 4-foot and 8-foot-wide mats. TerraLam 500 directly replaces traditional 8” bolted timber mats to construct temporary access roads, support drilling/equipment platforms, offer site access matting, and be used as bridge decking. And 508 mats require half the touches to lay out the same lineal footage as a timber mat.

The TerraLam 500 series are also available in long-grain or cross-grain depending on project needs. Please discuss with your sales representative about which is best suited for you.

terralam 708

TERRALAM 708

TerraLam 7-ply mats are designed to handle large mobile cranes and exceptionally heavy equipment. They are are engineered as a more efficient, durable, and sustainable replacement for 12” crane mats. Because they provide exceptional strength with significantly less weight than a timber mat, TerraLam 708 mats are easily moved around on rights-of-way.

TERRALAM ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS

Notes:

  1. Reference ANSI/APA PRG320-19 and CLT Handbook (US Edition)-2013 for symbols.
  2. Calculated with Shear Analogy method defined in CLT Handbook (US Edition)-2013.
  3. Design values and dimensions assumed new condition, normal duration of load, dry service conditions, and temperatures up to 1000F (380C).
  4. Uniform layers (1.375” per layer) constructed of southern pine dimensional lumber (grade #2 or better) and glued with moisture-activated polyurethane adhesive.
  5. Mechanical properties are adapted from SPIB-2011, NDS-2012, ASTM D2555-15, and FPL/USDA Wood Handbook – 1999.
  6. The ASD reference planar (rolling) shear stress (Fs) = Fv /3 per CLT Handbook (US Edition)-2013.
  7. The design values are calculated according to ASTM D245-06, D1990-14, and D5457-15 and the characteristic near-minimum values are assumed 25th percentile with 75% confidence. Characteristic values can be determined as follows:
  8. fb = 2.1 x Fb
  9. fv (Clear Wood) = 3.9 x Fv

Limitations:

  • TerraLam shall be designed for use in accordance with principles of mechanics using the design properties specified in this data sheet.
  • For critical applications (such as temporary bridges, outrigger support, etc.), approval of a qualified engineer is recommended.

OPTIONAL ENHANCEMENTS

Dowel Reinforcements

Dowel Reinforcements

Red oak dowels help reinforce the mats by adding additional bonding points to secure the mat layers together. The dowels are strategically placed around the mat in areas that encounter the highest loads and stresses to reinforce the mat without the use of metal fasteners, which can fall out on jobsites.

Specialized Treatment

Specialized Treatment

A special treatment is also available to provide additional protection in challenging environments. This borate derived treatment involves immersing the mats to allow deep penetration into the fiber of the wood. It creates a barrier that makes the mat inhospitable to fungal growth, enhancing performance in when mats may be exposed to persistent heat and humidity.
